Chapter 18

John anxiously looks down the street then back at his watch. “Where are they? It’s three o’clock.”

Jackie is sitting on the curb and looks up at John and says, “Be patient.”

He looks to his left and sees Jennifer and Tina sitting on the curb and shakes his head. It’s strange to see two teenage girls staring off in the distance instead of looking at their cell phones. He then notices all the cars parked on the side of the road in front of shops and boutiques. A place normally bustling on a Saturday afternoon but is now desolate. The only sound he can hear is the creaking noise caused by the loose street sign that is swaying in the wind.

John folds his arms and sighs. “What do you think the odds are that Fresler found a way to communicate with the CDC?”

“Have a little faith.” Jackie rolls her eyes.

John turns his head quickly toward Jackie. “In Fresler?”

“Yes, in Fresler. What is your problem with him?”

Before he can answer, Fresler and Sharon drive up in a black Ford Explorer. Jackie smiles at John and says, “They found transportation.” John just grunts.

Fresler unlocks the doors and rolls down the window. “What do you think?”

John walks over to Fresler’s window and says, “Can we get another SUV? This would be a tight fit for all of us.”

Fresler nods his head. “Sure, hop in. We’ll drive you over to the lot.”

The group piles in with Jennifer and Tina having to sit in the rear cargo space, but they don’t mind since the car has already heated up to sixty degrees. On their way over, Sharon asks if they found a place to spend the night.

Jackie nods. “Not far from the convenience store.”

“That’s great,” says Fresler.

“Did you find a way to communicate with the CDC?” asks John.

Fresler shakes his head. “Not yet. But the person who helped us locate these cars said he was going to ask around.”

John whispers in Jackie’s ear, “Told you so.” She just rolls her eyes.

Jackie tilts her head. “Ask around. What do mean?”

Sharon responds, “Apparently, there are seven people still living in Littlefork. Rob is going to check if anyone has a communication device, or a respirator mask for me. We told him we’d check back around three-thirty to see if he had any luck.”

“Sounds good,” says John. “I’m thinking we should get three SUVs instead of two.”

Fresler looks over at John with a puzzled look. “Why three?”

“In case one of the SUVs breaks down. On our trip from Kentucky, we saw people stranded on the side of the road with no transportation. We can’t call a tow truck.”

Fresler nods and says, “True, so who would drive the third SUV?”

John looks over his shoulder at the girls in the back and says, “Jennifer has her driver’s license, and I’m sure Tina has hers so they could drive together and you and Sharon can drive together. Jackie and I will drive the third SUV.”

“Sounds like a plan.”
